The past few years have been difficult in the mortgage industry. It’s tougher than ever to borrow money, and many brokers have had to lay off employees or sacrifice their businesses entirely. But not Province Mortgage Associates, a regional mortgage broker that’s grown from 12 employees at its launch in 2005 to 31 today. The company’s motto for success in troubled times? “Work hard, play hard.”
Employees at Province Mortgage certainly do work hard, but the company ensures that they have the tools to do well in a struggling industry. Province provides a mentorship program for new employees.
“You don’t feel like you’re on an island,” said David Currie, the company’s president and founder.
Currie’s leadership is another factor that sets Province apart from Rhode Island’s many mortgage agencies. According to his staff, Currie has an open-door policy and fosters a team environment rather than a hierarchy.
In addition to the superior work environment, Province offers staffers attractive benefits, such as an aggressive 401(k) plan and a great medical package. But unlike other mortgage broker firms, the company also values down time.
“You need a break once and awhile,” said Don Wilson, director of corporate relations. “Otherwise people would lose their minds.”
Province has instituted a “Fun Club.” Staffers organize monthly office events, like wear-your-favorite-sports-jersey day, a guess-that-baby-picture contest, and even an ugly-sweater competition.
Families don’t get left out of the good times, either. Province plans outings to polo matches, miniature golf tournaments and summer barbeques for staffers, clients and families.
“Getting to know people outside the office is the way to build a strong team,” said Currie. •
