PROVIDENCE – The Rhode Island Public Expenditure Council will honor Providence Police Chief Col. Hugh Clements and R.I. Department of Environmental Management Director Janet Coit with its annual public service awards, RIPEC announced Wednesday.

The organization said the RIPEC public service awards are designed to recognize “individuals who have demonstrated sustained superior performance in the service of the Rhode Island taxpayer; fiscal responsibility and business acumen; a record of integrity and devotion to public service; personal initiative and resourcefulness; and diligence and productivity.”

Clements will receive the Robert M. Goodrich Distinguished Public Service Award, which recognizes an “outstanding local employee,” for his work developing the Community Relations Bureau at the Providence Police Department, which works with programs such as inner-city mentoring programs, community crime watches and safe neighborhoods.

Coit will be honored with the Gary S. Sasse Distinguished Public Service Award, which recognizes an “outstanding state employee,” for her work preserving and enhancing Rhode Island’s environmental resources while implementing lean government initiatives. RIPEC called Coit an “excellent steward of tax payer dollars.”

The event will feature a keynote address from journalist Bob Woodward, as well as words from Gov. Gina M. Raimondo, Senate President Dominick J. Ruggerio and House Speaker Nicholas A. Mattiello.
