RIPTA cuts short Prov./Newport ferry service for WaterFire

The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) announced plans last week to cut short ferry service between Providence and Newport later this month on a request from WaterFire planners.

The service will end at 3:15 p.m. on Aug. 27 so RIPTA can close the hurricane barrier, which WaterFire requested be done to in order to keep the water levels deep enough for boat to travel along the Providence River, according to a RIPTA statement.

Regular ferry service is expected to resume Sunday Aug. 28, once the barrier is lifted, RIPTA said. For more information call RIPTA at 401-781-9400.
