Ruth Simmons gets nod to lead Prairie View A&M University

PROVIDENCE – Ruth J. Simmons, the former president of Brown University has been named the sole finalist for the position of president of Prairie View A&M University in College Station, Texas.

Simmons has been interim president of the university since July.

She was the first African-American to lead an Ivy League institution with her tenure at Brown. Before Brown, Simmons served as present of Smith College in Massachusetts.

“After briefly serving as interim president of Prairie View A&M University, Dr. Ruth J. Simmons has consented to continue her distinguished career as president,” said Charles Schwartz, chairman of the board of regents at Prairie View A&M. “The Board of Regents is pleased to name Dr. Simmons as the sole finalist for the position. She will formally become the eighth president of Prairie View A&M University at the next Board of Regents’ meeting.”
