NEWPORT – Sail Newport announced in late January that Bill Belichick, coach of the New England Patriots, donated his powerboat – a 24-foot Grady White vessel – to the nonprofit community sailing center.
“We are thrilled and grateful to coach Belichick for donating his boat for use in our public sailing programs. The boat will be used as a support and safety vessel for all of our instructional programs and regattas, including the May 7-20, 2018 North American Stopover of the Volvo Ocean Race,” said Brad Read, executive director of Sail Newport, in a prepared statement.
Currently in the throes of a fundraising effort called Campaign for Blue Space, Sail Newport is raising funds for a new marine education and recreational facility that will expand its educational programming.
The new center is anticipated to open in July as part of Sail Newport’s campus in Fort Adams State Park.
