Saint Anne’s Hospital in Fall River is opening a $1.4 million expansion of its Hudner Oncology Center. The new, 7,000 square-foot facility, named the Wilson W. Curtis Oncology Wing, nearly doubles the center’s size.
The opening coincides with the hospital’s celebration of its 25th year of cancer care. Saint Anne’s Hospital’s cancer-care efforts started in 1976 when a group of surgical oncologists from the former Boston University Medical Center set up a weekly clinic in Saint Anne’s basement.

Today the Hudner Oncology Center staffs more than 80 medical, professional and support staff, including 10 medical and radiation oncologists. More than 1,900 patients visited the center in 2000.
Hudner maintains clinical and academic affiliations with the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Boston Medical Center, the Longwood Radiation Oncology Center/Harvard Medical School, National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project and Cancer and Acute Leukemia Group B.
Early next year, Saint Anne’s plans to open a new CT-based, three-dimensional radiation-treatment planning facility. It should enable physicians and physicists to plan a patient’s radiation therapy more exactly by conforming the doses of radiation to the tumor and surrounding microscopic disease through a three-dimensional, computer-guided process.
