The workshops will be offered Wednesday and on Nov. 20 and will be repeated in February 2020. Mental health care providers who attend the workshops are eligible for continuing-education credits approved by the National Board of Certified Counselors. Cost to attend is $80 per workshop.

Judith Drew, assistant professor and graduate program director of the Clinical Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling program at Salve Regina, has organized the workshops in partnership with the Continuity of Care Group. Clinical directors and clinicians from the group will present the training, which includes topics of interest to both experienced counselors and those new to working with the at-risk youth population. A full list of training topics can be found at salve.edu/coc-fall.

“This professional-development series is offered for all levels of staff who work with [youths] at risk,” Drew said in a news release. “The workshops will help participants develop skills in collaborating with public and private agencies to meet the treatment needs of the [youths] and their families. Participants are trained in models to reduce re-victimization and prevent [youths] at risk from entering the correctional system through working directly with the families. When all parties in the system receive care and treatment, rehabilitation can occur that can result in fewer [youths] in prison and families remaining intact.”

“Salve Regina recognizes that continuing education is critically important to the counseling profession and we are proud to partner with the [Continuity of Care Group] to support practicing counselors with these in-depth workshops,” said Tobias Stapleton, dean of graduate studies and continuing education at Salve Regina. “We look forward to welcoming participants to our Warwick location.”

Training takes place at the Salve Regina University Center for Adult Education at 144 Metro Center Blvd. in Warwick. Registration is required, and can be completed online.
