NEWPORT – A new poll released Monday by Salve Regina University’s Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy shows poor but improving approval ratings for Gov. Daniel J. McKee and ongoing dissatisfaction with the state's direction. The survey of 876 likely Rhode Island voters found 34% of respondents approving of McKee’s job performance, while 26% approved of Lt. Gov. Sabina Matos. Asked for their opinions on the “overall direction of the state,” less than half (41%) of respondents believe the Rhode Island was on the right track. Fifty-nine percent of respondents, including three-quarters of independents, said the state was headed in the wrong direction, with Democrats more than twice as likely than Republicans believing the state is on the right path. A similar survey released in June by Salve's Pell Center of 1,450 Rhode Island voters showed a strong majority (71%) disapproved of McKee’s job performance; And 60% believed Rhode Island is heading in the wrong direction, including 72% of independents. In the results released on Monday, the partisan divide regarding voters' most-concerning issues this election cycle showed 44% of Republicans citing immigration policy while 35% of Democrats said it was the economy. On the presidential race, Vice President Kamala Harris, a Democrat, now holds a 14-point lead over former President Donald Trump, the Republican candidate. The Pell Center in a release said the presidential race in Rhode Island “seems to hinge on only a handful of issues" and that, “Issues like crime, gun control, health care, education, foreign policy, climate change, taxes, and student loan forgiveness barely registered with voters." Democrats are motivated mainly by the state of democracy and reproductive rights while their Republican counterparts are focused on immigration policy and the economy. Looking at the 1st Congressional District race, incumbent Rep. Gabe Amo, D-R.I., leads challenger Allen Waters by a 56% to 27% margin. In the 2nd Congressional District, Rep. Seth Magaziner, D-R.I., leads challenger Steven Corvi by a margin of 50% to 37%. U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., leads his Republican challenger - state Rep. Patricia Morgan, by 16 percentage points. The poll was conducted as a part of the Pell Center’s “Voices of Value” project. Fielded by Embold Research between Sept. 16 -20 via the internet and text messaging, the poll was directed by the Pell Center's Executive Director Jim Ludes and fellow and associate director Katie Sonder.
