SBA agrees to raze buildings at Rocky Point

WARWICK – The U.S. Small Business Administration has agreed to raze buildings at the former Rocky Point amusement park, according to Mayor Scott Avedisian.

“We are pleased that the SBA has agreed to remove these unsafe structures, and look forward to working with them to make sure that this nuisance does not pose any future threats to the neighborhood or public safety,” Avedisian said.

He said city officials and representatives of the SBA’s Rhode Island office had met at the site on Nov. 3 to discuss their course of action for the property, which will include seeking court approval for the hiring of demolition crews and the removal of debris from the site.

The SBA serves as the receiver for the property.

On Oct. 17, Warwick had threatened to demolish the buildings in the former midway and place a lien on the property, if the receiver did not agree within seven days to demolish the buildings. The city’s ultimatum followed an Oct. 16 fire in the park’s former administration building, and a June 2000 fire that also damaged buildings at the site.

The 122-acre former amusement park on Warwick Neck has been targeted for redevelopment by Pennsylvania-based Toll Bros. The luxury homebuilder, which initially planned nearly 400 units in a New Urbanist design, this summer announced it was scaling back its plans in light of the state’s housing slump.
