PROVIDENCE – The Senate on Wednesday approved a bill allowing mobile sports betting through Twin River casinos in Lincoln and Tiverton.
“The new in-person Sportsbook that opened in November has been very popular, with lines sometimes stretching out the doors,” Senate President Dominick J. Ruggerio, D-Providence, who sponsored the bill, said in a news release. “Expanding to mobile gaming would provide a convenient option … and open up the economic benefits beyond the walls of Twin River.”

The bill calls for creation of an app consumers could use to bet at Twin River from anyplace within Rhode Island, according to the statement. Bettors must set up accounts in person at Twin River before using the app and must physically be in the state when using it to place wagers.
The state would continue to receive 51 percent of all winnings from sports wagering, among the highest rates in the country.
The bill now moves to the House, where a similar measure has already been introduced by House Speaker Nicholas A. Mattiello, D-Cranston.
The state on Feb. 5 said $6.5 million was wagered in Rhode Island on bets related to the Super Bowl.
That dwarfs the $1.03 million in bets placed by the end of December, covering the first five weeks of legalized sports betting in the state, according to the R.I. Department of Revenue.
