Sexual assault center to relocate; has new name

The Sexual Assault & Trauma Resource Center held a press conference on Monday at the site of its future headquarters, 100 Medway St., in Providence.

The event provided news about the center’s new $2.3 million capital campaign, a tour of the center’s new offices, the announcement of a new name and organization identity, and a schedule of programs and events in April during Sexual Assault Awareness month.

The capital campaign should enable the center to move into its own building with space to accommodate any growing needs of the organization. The building will be configured and designed to the center’s own specifications, under the guidance of Lamborghini-Feibelman, which has created a plan for the new offices.

The center was founded as the R.I. Rape Crisis Center in 1973. In 1998, the name was changed as needs and resources broadened. At this new beginning in a new building, center officials said the moment is ripe for a new name and graphic identity.

The month of April is national Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Each year, the center develops programs to educate the public about prevention and awareness. This year, the center identified young Rhode Island men as the key target audience.

With this in mind, the center created two programs with local radio. One is in conjunction with Citadel whereby high school students competed in writing their own ads about sexual assault prevention. The winners can hear their ads broadcast on Hot 106 and 92 PRO-FM. The second program is with WBRU. On April 29, WBRU and the center will host a clean-lyrics, alternative rock concert for all ages at Lupo’s.

The center’s mission is to reduce the prevalence of sexual abuse and violence, and to support and advocate for those affected by it.
