Shawmut Design and Construction
SAFETY HAS ALWAYS been a priority on construction jobsites – but ensuring it is more challenging than ever due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In response, Shawmut Design and Construction this spring unveiled a cutting-edge digital platform to check employees and contractors for COVID-19 symptoms and manage contact tracing.
“We had to make real-time adjustments on the fly to keep our people safe first and foremost, and to make sure we continued to deliver for our clients,” said Kevin Sullivan, Shawmut’s executive vice president of New England operations. “We experienced added complexities on many projects that we continued to work right through and were not impacted by shutdowns.”
Implemented in addition to the company’s safety plan built around Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines to minimize exposure and risk, the platform is accessed by scanning a quick-response code from a mobile device. The user is then asked to complete a project-specific survey, and the platform flags those who are experiencing COVID-19 systems or may have been exposed to someone who is infected.
Flagged individuals may then be asked for additional information, including contact tracing data or asked to follow CDC quarantining guidelines.
The paperless platform is now in use at every Shawmut office and job site in the country, including the Aloft Hotel, in Providence, and Brown University’s performing arts center and residence hall projects.
Built entirely in-house in two weeks, the project required a team effort from the company’s marketing, information technology and safety departments.
Developers leveraged the company’s partnership with Microsoft to seamlessly integrate it into its existing technology systems. All of the data collected through the platform is securely stored using a cloud data source.
Using Shawmut Vitals “reduces friction points as people enter a jobsite” and maximizes the site superintendent’s time, ultimately allowing the company to enhance its efficiency and productivity in these challenging times.
