NEWPORT – The Harold Brown Villa, also known as the Slocum estate, is on the market for $5.9 million.
Built in 1880, the 25-room Gilded Age estate at 459 Bellevue Ave. sits on 4.85 acres, and is described as “park-like” by Lila Delman Real Estate International, which is marketing the property. The grounds were designed by the Olmsted Brothers and feature specimen trees and plantings that allow for privacy.

The estate was once owned by Eileen Slocum, referred to in her 2008 obituary in The New York Times as a “doyenne” of Newport society and stalwart of the Republican party both in Rhode Island and nationally. She also was referred to as the “last grande dame of Newport.”
The home was the site of numerous political fundraisers, including for President Gerald R. Ford, U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole and Vice President Dick Cheney. This is the first time the estate has been publicly offered for sale, according to the agency.
“This presents an extraordinary opportunity to acquire a piece of Newport’s history,” Melanie Delman of Lila Delman Real Estate International said in a statement. “The home has a stately presence, with classical interiors, marble columns and fireplaces, and beautiful decorative detail throughout.”
