SOUTH KINGSTOWN – South County Health President & CEO Louis Giancola has announced his retirement, but will continue in the role as the health care system’s board of trustees seeks his successor, the company said Thursday.

“The decision was not an easy one because of my deep connection to the organization, staff, and the community,” said Giancola in a statement. “It has been my privilege and honor to be part of South County Health.”

South County Health owns South County Hospital, the sole independent hospital in the state. It also owns South County Home Health, South County Medical Group, and South County Surgical Supply. The combined properties offer a comprehensive range of advanced inpatient, outpatient and home health services.

The company credited Giancola’s contributions as having led to significant improvements in South County Health’s ability to provide exceptional patient care while expanding the breadth and scope of health care and medical services into Washington County.

Giancola was appointed to the role of president and CEO of South County Health in 2000. He previously served as chief operating officer at Lahey Health and Women & Infants Hospital.

“Lou has made a generational impact on South County Health,” stated Dennis Lynch, chairman of the board of trustees, South County Health. “The legacy he leaves is one of a robust, financially stable, independent health care system delivering high quality care across Washington County and beyond. On behalf of the entire Board of Trustees and the entire community, we thank him and wish Lou every happiness going forward.”

“I am blessed to be ending my 50-year career in a place, and among people, that I care for so deeply,” said Giancola. “While I am excited about my upcoming retirement, I remain fully committed to advancing South County Health and working alongside those who have made this such a special place.”
