AFTER IDENTIFYING THEIR NICHE in light-industrial and manufacturing staffing almost 20 years ago, Danilo Reyes and his team at Providence-based Available Staffing Network LLC saw continual gains in the firm’s bottom line. That culminated in $7.2 million of business last year.

Never once, according to Reyes, the company’s founder and CEO, did the risks of a pandemic – and its effects on business – arise as a consideration.

“When COVID-19 started, I was discouraged,” Reyes said. “But I switched gears quickly and I started to say, ‘The gates are wide open, and I think I’m going to be able to build an even bigger business.’ ”

He made the decision not to apply for a U.S. Small Business Administration Paycheck Protection Program loan. He preferred to focus on cash flow and maintaining strategic partnerships during a challenging time, partly to leave funds available for restaurant and barbershop owners.

“Staffing is a holy business,” Reyes said, “because we put people to work.”
