Stop & Shop recently delivered 1,500 turkeys to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank to aid with the organization’s annual Holiday Meal Drive, a program that provides meals throughout the holidays to people in need.
The turkey donation was made possible through Stop & Shop’s “Turkey Express” program, which donates more than 19,000 turkeys to food banks in seven states each year.
“We are anticipating a difficult winter,” said Andrew Schiff, executive director of the Food Bank. “With the continuing and expected increases in home utilities, gas and the rising costs of food, there is going to be additional strain on the food budgets.”
A USDA statistical study on food insecurity shows that one out of every eight Rhode Island households does not have enough to eat – an increase from one in 10 just eight years ago.
“Stop & Shop is dedicated to giving back to the community and helping to ensure that no one goes without a healthy meal,” said Brian Aubertine, district manager for Stop & Shop. •
