Strong winds cause outages in R.I., Mass.

PROVIDENCE – High winds and snow squalls hit Rhode Island Monday, with winds causing power outages across the state.

The National Weather Service issued a high wind warning in the state until 7 p.m., reporting winds speeds of 20-35 miles per hour with gusts of up to 60 miles per hour.

As of 3:30 p.m., more than 5,633 customers were without electricity in Rhode Island, according to National Grid Rhode Island. Providence County was the most impacted county in the state, with more than 4,300 customers impacted.

Cumberland was the most affected municipality in Rhode Island, with nearly 2000 customers affected.

National Grid also said that hundreds of its customers were affected in Bristol County, Mass. as of 3:30 p.m.

Eversource said that more than 11,300 customers were impacted in Eastern Massachusetts as of 3:30 p.m.  In Western Massachusetts, more than 7,200 customers were affected at that time.
