Sylvia named technology partnership officer at NUWC Division Newport

NEWPORT – Mary Sylvia is the new technology partnership officer at Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport, in the Technology Partnerships Office, NUWC said in a news release.

She is senior adviser to Vittorio Ricci, NUWC Newport’s chief technology officer, on decisions relating to strategic collaborations and business matters that are tech-related. Sylvia replaces Theresa Baus, who has retired.

Sylvia’s duties include identifying technologies that will enhance the division’s base; and leading the effort to develop policies and procedures that improve the division’s sharing and, when appropriate, licensing of intellectual property and technology in fulfilling its mission.

The North Kingstown resident has been serving as director of strategy implementation for the Undersea Warfare Weapons, Vehicles and Defensive Systems Department, and as the director of Division Newport’s Advanced Naval Technology Exercise for 2018. Prior to this assignment, she served in various leadership and management roles for NUWC Newport. She has served in the U.S. Navy for 35 years.

Sylvia has a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from what is now the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. She has a master’s degree in business communication from Jones International University in Centennial, Colo.

NUWC Division Newport provides research, development, test and evaluation, engineering and fleet support for submarines, autonomous underwater systems, undersea offensive and defensive weapons systems, and countermeasures.
