LINCOLN – The Southeastern New England Defense Industry Alliance, or SENEDIA, based in Middletown, offers a free workshop for teachers and administrators today on Next Generation Science Standards training and curriculum. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m.

SENEDIA offers the sessions in partnership with JASON Learning, an educational curriculum created by Robert Ballard, a former undersea explorer and University of Rhode Island oceanography professor.

The all-day session features learning in Innovation Generation and World of Waves.

Innovation Generation, created with Real Jobs Rhode Island grant money, according to SENEDIA, is designed to introduce fourth-grade through eighth-grade students to science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics areas such as cybersecurity, unmanned water vehicles and undersea acoustics, says the SENEDIA website. The goal is to create a stronger STEAM career pipeline.

Supported with an Office of Naval Research grant, meanwhile, the World of Waves programming is geared toward fourth-graders, sixth-graders and eighth-graders. It will guide educators in teaching students about the physics of waves and how it impacts things such as ocean surfing, animal communication and mobile networks, according to SENEDIA.

Attendees can expect insight into instructional strategies, best practices concerning curriculum implementation and methods to inspire students, says SENEDIA, along with free access to JASON’s curricula.

The free workshop runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Northern Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce in Lincoln.
