Denise Flagg, Sue Greco and Donna McCarthy all believe that a good education should be available to every student in the state, no matter their family’s socioeconomic status. The three Rhode Island women were already in the children’s book industry when they joined forces to create a new brand.
In May of 2020, they founded Meraki Publications LLC, which puts out The Bubblah, an industry-leading magazine where children can create most of the content by writing, reporting, submitting art and being a junior photojournalist.
“It’s really a chance for kids to show what they’ve got,” said McCarthy, the creative director and an art teacher for the last 30 years.
The women provide guidelines to readers who wish to participate, working alongside schools and educational organizations across New England.
Greco, the assistant editor and game designer, said the magazine has received a tremendous amount of work, and is already working on content that won’t publish for another year.
Within the first six months, the magazine garnered more than 500 subscribers for its digital product. The magazine also runs features on businesses that cater to kids and features appropriate advertisements from local businesses.
