U.S. News awards 4 R.I. nursing homes top honors

PROVIDENCE – Four nursing homes in Rhode Island were designated a “Best Nursing Home” rating from U.S. News and World Report in rankings released Tuesday.

Briarcliffe Manor in Johnston, Hallworth House in Providence, Hattie Ide Chaffee Home in East Providence and Sunny View Nursing Home in Warwick were the honored Rhode Island recipients this year. All four nursing homes received “High Performing” status for both short-term and long-term care this year, receiving a score of 5 out of 5 overall.

Facilities earned an overall ranking and were rated on the quality of their short-term and long-term care.

Short-term ratings examine patient outcomes along with care practices and staffing levels. Long-term care ratings, which are new this year, look at resident outcomes along with other measures including the rate of substantiated complaints, the use of anti-anxiety and other psychiatric drugs and staffing levels.

This year’s evaluation encompassed more than 15,000 nursing homes nationwide, bestowing a U.S. News Best Nursing Home designation on nearly 3,000 facilities.

Overall scores were calculated by incorporating each nursing home’s short-term rehabilitation rating with its long-term care rating rather than relying on ratings by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, as the report has done in previous years.

Both types of ratings are based on CMS data collected this summer, according to U.S. News & World Report.

The report reviewed 80 Rhode Island Nursing homes. Several other homes in the ranking also received “High Performance” ratings for either short- or long-term care:
