NEWPORT – In the most recent U.S. News and World Report rankings, Newport ranked No. 15 in the United States for “Best Summer Vacations in the USA” and No. 18 for summer vacations in the world.

The rankings are based half on user scores and half on editor scores. The editor scores include rankings on sights, culture, people, food, shopping, family, nightlife, “adventure,” romance and accessibility. Individual categorical ratings were not provided for each city.

The ranking highlighted Newport’s Cliff Walk, Thames Street, the city’s mansions and Fort Adams State Park as its primary sightseeing highlights. The review also highlighted the city’s seafood fare, upscale shops and the city’s penchant for sailing.

Boston ranked No. 1 in the U.S. this year, followed by Seaside, Ore.

Paris ranked no. 1 in the world rankings (Boston ranked No. 3 behind Florence, Italy).

New England was very well-represented in the U.S. summer vacation rankings with Newport, Boston, Portland, Maine (No. 6), Bar Harbor, Maine (No. 8), and Cape Cod in Massachusetts (No. 11).

Curiously enough, Portland, Maine, did not make the best summer vacations in the world, despite ranking ahead of Newport in the national rankings.
