PROVIDENCE – The University of Connecticut has named Thomas C. Katsouleas as its 16th president, UConn announced Tuesday.

Katsouleas, who will begin this summer, will replace President Susan Herbst, who is leaving when her contract ends after eight years in the job.

Katsouleas is currently executive vice president and provost at the University of Virginia. Prior to that, he served as Vinik dean of engineering at Duke University.

“UConn is a vital piece of Connecticut’s economic engine, and I look forward to working with Tom in ensuring that the university and our state’s economic-development team, large corporations, small businesses and startups alike are working together to help develop a pipeline of talent and an environment that supports business development and economic growth,” said Conn. Gov. Ned Lamont.

UConn said Katsouleas is a leading scholar in the field of plasma science and has authored or co-authored more than 250 publications.

“I’m honored and humbled to be appointed president of the University of Connecticut, one of the most outstanding public research universities in the nation and one of Connecticut’s greatest assets,” Katsouleas said in a statement.
