UMass Dartmouth professor wins Fulbright-Nehru Scholarship

DARTMOUTH – In late March, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Professor Amit Tandon was awarded a Fulbright-Nehru Scholarship for 2017-2018 to study weather patterns impacted by monsoons travelling over the Indian Ocean.

“Globally, we can’t make reliable predictions more than 10 days ahead,” said Tandon, a professor of mechanical engineering and affiliate professor at the School for Marine Science and Technology, in prepared remarks. “Understanding the science of the monsoons is critical to generating the two-week weather predictions. However, these forecasting challenges have been unsolved for at least 100 years. As scientists and engineers, we have to keep trying our best to allow nature to open up her secrets to us.”

Tandon is hopeful the study will improve multi-week weather forecasting across the globe as existing computerized weather prediction models improve over time through a better understanding of the sea’s interactions with the atmosphere.

Tandon is leading the U.S. team of scientists researching the weather patterns, and will be joined by teams of experts from the United Kingdom, France and Australia. Research conducted by Tandon in what is being called “Studying the impact of ocean mixing, oceanic fronts and air-sea interaction in the Bay of Bengal for reliable intra-seasonal prediction of South Asian monsoons,” will include four months at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore.
