PROVIDENCE – United Natural Foods Inc. reported net income of $30.5 million for its fiscal 2018 first quarter, ended on Oct. 28, an increase of 4.4 percent year over year.
Earnings per diluted share were 60 cents, an increase of 2 cents from one year prior.

UNFI reported $2.46 billion in sales for the period, an increase of 7.9 percent year over year.
“We are pleased with our strong start to the fiscal year, which reflects broad-based growth across all of our significant sales channels for the fiscal first quarter,” said Steven L. Spinner, chairman and CEO.
Thirty-five percent of UNFI’s sales came from Whole Foods Market, about $835 million, while $639 million in sales came from independently owned natural products retailers (26 percent) and $704 million came from conventional supermarkets (28 percent). About 11 percent of the company’s sales came from other channels, accounting for $262 million in sales.
Whole Foods Market sales for UNFI increased 14 percent year over year.
