PROVIDENCE – United Natural Foods Inc. on Tuesday reported a third-quarter profit of $33 million, after posting a $21 million loss a year prior. For the quarter, which ended May 2, the organic and specialty food distributor reported a profit of 52 cents per diluted share compared with a loss of 7 cents per diluted share in the third quarter of 2025. The third-quarter profit was attributed to a decrease in expenses, including a 7% year-over-year drop in operating expenses to $954 million. This was driven primarily by insurance proceeds and the benefits from cost-saving initiatives, including network optimization actions and higher levels of distribution center productivity. The company posted revenue of $7.72 billion in the period, down 4.2% from $8.06 billion a year ago. The company said this drop reflected a 450-basis-point impact from strategic network optimization, the transition out of the Allentown, Pa., distribution center and unwinding short-term projects in the natural-products group. “Through disciplined execution of our value-creation strategy, we delivered underlying sales growth, higher profitability and strong free cash flow, which strengthened our balance sheet and increased our financial flexibility,” UNFI CEO Sandy Douglas said. “At the same time, we advanced capabilities to help our customers and suppliers grow profitably, while continuing to invest in next-generation supply chain solutions that are steadily improving our effectiveness and efficiency.” For the quarter, the company’s natural sales segment sales increased 4.4% year over year to $4.34 billion. However, the conventional product segment sales fell 13.6% year over year to $3.1 billion and the retail sales segment fell 10.3% year over year to $515 million. United Natural expects full-year earnings in the range of $2.40 to $2.60 per share, with revenue in the range of $31.1 billion to $31.3 billion.
