Health care workers back plans to protect Social Security, improve health care reform in Rhode Island

Democrat David Cicilline earned the strong backing of the United Nurses & Allied Professionals today for his campaign for Congress. The endorsement comes just two days after Cicilline picked up support from the Alliance for Retired Americans, an organization representing nearly 20,000 Rhode Islanders.

Cicillline has emphasized his commitment to expanding health care coverage throughout his campaign for Congress. A supporter of a public option, Cicilline has described the health care reform law passed by Congress as “a work in progress” and pledged to ensure it is implemented in a way that offers the greatest benefits to Rhode Islanders. Cicilline’s Republican opponent has made clear he supports repealing health care reform – reversing many of the benefits the legislation has established.

“My grandmother was a proud graduate of St. Joe’s and a registered nurse for many years at St. Joseph’s Hospital, so I am especially excited that the United Nurses and Allied Professionals union has endorsed my campaign for Congress,” said Cicilline. “Nurses offer selfless care and life-saving treatment in hospitals and health centers throughout our country, and I am happy that the UNAP is putting their trust and faith in my campaign for Congress. I am looking forward to working with the UNAP to continue to improve health care reform for Rhode Islanders.”

“The UNAP is very confident that David Cicilline will be a strong and effective voice in Washington for issues that affect working families in Rhode Island. David is committed to supporting and improving health care reform to provide health security for all Americans. He is also committed to reversing the tax breaks that were given to the wealthiest Americans at the expense of the middle class, and to protecting our Social Security system. Most importantly, we know that he will work tirelessly to strengthen our economy and bring good jobs to Rhode Island. The UNAP is proud to support David Cicilline for Congress,” said UNAP President Linda McDonald, RN.

The UNAP represents 5,500 nurses, technologists, therapists, support staff, and other health care workers. As advocates for health care workers and patients, they seek to create a humane health care system that offers accessible, affordable, quality care for all. In addition, they advocate for an equal voice for health care professionals in the decision-making processes that affect jobs and patients.
