PROVIDENCE – After more than 30 years on the East Side, United Way of Rhode Island next week will move from its current headquarters to the city’s Olneyville neighborhood.
Its new office is a 22,000-square-foot, 163-year-old building in the former Calender Mills, said Hank Sennott, United Way vice president of communications. The mill complex is now a mixed-use development, being completed by Baltimore-based Struever Bros. Eccles & Rouse Inc.
“In our new building, many of us who didn’t have offices now have one,” Sennottsaid. “Our current location is office-cubicle-city, which was the thing back in the day.”
In January, United Way announced that it had sold its 42,000-square-foot headquarters at 229 Waterman St. to R.I. Acquisitions LLC for $4.375 million. (READ MORE)
Along with more office space – the nonprofit shares its current building with lessees – the new headquarters will include meeting space that will be accessible to neighborhood groups, Sennott said.
The move to Olneyville is also part of an attempt by the nonprofit to integrate itself into a new community.
“We have enjoyed being a part of the Wayland Square neighborhood for the past 30 years and are looking forward to being active members of the Olneyville community in the years ahead,” President and CEO Anthony Maione said in a statement.
