Urban planning and historic preservation school launches in Providence

PROVIDENCE – Set to open in September, Charette High School is a new charter school in the city focused on urban planning and historic preservation.

A tuition-free, public institution, Charette will only serve Providence residents via a curriculum including core content meeting R.I. Department of Education graduation requirements and project-based community learning. Located at 335 Westminster St., the school shares a facility with the Rhode Island State Archives building.

“There’s a direct connection between the school’s mission and the school’s unique sense of community in Providence – the architecture, the history, educational and civic empowerment,” said Robert Pilkington, Charette founder and operator, in a statement.

“Charette students will be in the field learning about city planning, the preservation of historic buildings and engage in the community to become participants in civic affairs, problem solvers and critical thinkers,” he added in the remarks.
