URI names dean of College of the Environment and Life Sciences

KINGSTON, R.I. — The University of Rhode Island has appointed Jeffrey R. Seemann dean of the College of the Environment and Life Sciences. Seemann, who currently chairs the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Nevada, Reno, will begin work on July 1, URI officials said.

Seemann will take over for William R. Wright, who served as interim dean of the college after Dean Margaret Leinen left for a position at the National Science Foundation last year. Seemann’s responsibilities will include providing leadership for the college’s academic, research and outreach programs. In addition, he will manage fundraising efforts and serve as director of URI’s Agricultural Experiment Station and Cooperative Extension. He also will hold an appointment as professor in the Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, URI officials said.

Seemann also is an adjunct research scientist at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University. According to URI, he is an internationally recognized plant biologist whose research has appeared in more than 80 publications to date, and resulted in nearly $12 million in grants.
