URI receives $4M pledge for communication and media school

PROVIDENCE – The University of Rhode Island has received a $4 million pledge for the Harrington School of Communication and Media, URI announced Friday.

The gift is from Richard J. Harrington and Jean Harrington, who have pledged more than $12 million to the Harrington School to date.

The newest pledge will support the renovation of the second, third and fourth floors of Ranger Hall, home to the Harrington School. URI and its College of Arts and Sciences will augment the donation with $2 million for the renovation.

“Dick and Jean Harrington have long recognized the crucial importance of interdisciplinary education and innovation in the fields of communications and media,” said University President David M. Dooley. “Their visionary support of URI’s communications programs demonstrates their commitment to academic excellence in a field that is changing at an astonishing pace, and which demands the highest standards of integrity.”

Harrington is the chairman emeritus of the venture capital firm Cue Ball and he was formerly the president and CEO of the Thomson Reuters Corp.
