SOUTH KINGSTOWN – Cherish Prickett, a University of Rhode Island five-year International Engineering Program student, has won a $7,500 award from the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation, which recognizes undergraduate students studying mathematics, engineering and the natural sciences.

Upon completion of her program, Prickett, who is from Lilburn, Ga., will receive a degree in industrial and systems engineering complimented by studying the German language. She will also spend one year studying abroad in Germany, at the Technical University of Braunschweig, and participating in an internship with a German company specializing in product delivery to consumers.

In a statement, Prickett said: “We’re a global world. We can’t isolate ourselves. Disasters are all over the world, and how we respond to them can always be improved.”

After graduating next year, Prickett plans to get a master’s degree in operations research and a doctorate in industrial engineering in the hopes of performing research for disaster-relief nonprofits and government agencies.

Pricket is one of 240 U.S. scholarship recipients for the 2017-2018 academic year. The foundation, named in honor of the late Arizona senator, is a federally endowed program.

The foundation also named honorable mentions, including Rachel Bellisle, of Exeter, a URI junior majoring in computer engineering.
