Roger Williams Park Zoo received a $10,000 donation from Verizon for Trixie’s Fund, a field trip grant program that enables school children in Rhode Island’s urban neighborhoods to participate in the zoo’s science education program.
The zoo provides science education to 55,000 students throughout southern New England every year, through field trips and formal programs that are aligned with the National Science Standards.
Part of the donation made it possible for two classes from the J.F. Deering Middle School in West Warwick to visit the zoo and participate in the “Oh Give Me a Biome” program, which teaches students about grasslands in Africa, Australia and North America and how animals adapt to survive in each specific ecosystem.
Trixie’s Fund grants are open to schools or organizations located in Rhode Island’s urban cores where at least 15 percent of the children live in poverty. These communities include Central Falls, Newport, Pawtucket, Providence, West Warwick and Woonsocket.
