WARWICK – Vivint Solar Inc. is expanding into Rhode Island, and plans to hire between 10 and 20 employees.

The company, which offers residential rooftop solar options, announced on Wednesday its plans to enter the Rhode Island market.

The company said it will open a sales office at 55 Jefferson Blvd. in Warwick and expects to hire the sales employees in the coming months. The company said it intends to remain in the Ocean state long term.

The press release cited a research study conducted by the U.S. Energy Information Administration which concludes that more energy is consumed in Rhode Island by consumers than corporations as part of its reason for entering the Rhode Island market.

Vivint Solar also cites Rhode Island’s Renewable Energy Growth Program as an incentive to sell, and buy, solar. The program works through National Grid PLC, which assigns credit for all electricity produced by a solar energy system. According to the press release, credits will offset the customer’s utility bill. After the customer’s utility bill is fully offset, the value for any remaining credits for the month will then be paid out to the customer.

“We commend Rhode Island’s local leaders for developing the incredible Renewable Energy Growth Program that brings attractive economic benefits to solar customers. This program is an ideal model for renewable energy and one that we hope many other states will imitate,” said David Bywater, CEO of Vivint Solar.

Vivint Solar is based in Lehi, Utah, and operates in 16 states.
