
PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island was ranked as the second-least hardest-working state in the U.S. in a report by WalletHub Monday.
The report considers 10 metrics related to employment, working hours, commuting time, volunteering and leisure time. Rhode Island was ranked only ahead of West Virginia this year. North Dakota was determined to be the “hardest-working” state in the U.S. New Hampshire was the highest-rated state in New England at No. 11 this year.

Among “direct work factors,” Rhode Island ranked No. 49 in the nation while for “indirect work factors,” the state ranked No. 29 in the country.
Rhode Island’s lowest-ranking metric was average workweek hours at 37.5 hours, ranking No. 48 in the U.S. The state also was said to have the fifth-least share of workers with unused vacation time at 23.3%.
This year’s Rhode Island working metrics from lowest-ranked to highest-ranked:
- Average work hours per week: No. 48 for 37.5 hours
- Share of workers with unused vacation time: No. 46 at 23.3% (states with the most unused vacation rate were ranked highest)
- Share of engaged workers: No. 38 at 31%
- Average leisure time spent per day: No. 37 at 352 minutes (states with higher leisure times ranked lower)
- Annual volunteer hours per resident: No. 36 at 25.3 hours (states ranked higher for more annual volunteer hours)
- Employment rate: No. 32 at 95.9%
- Share of household where no adults work: No. 32 at 28.1% (states ranked higher for lower rates)
- Average commute time: No. 22 at 24.6 minutes (states ranked lower for shorter commute times)
- Share of workers with multiple jobs: No. 18 at 5.8% (states ranked higher for a greater share of workers with multiple jobs)
- Idle youth rate: No. 6 at 8.4% (states ranked higher for lower idle youth [ages 18-24] rates)
