War memorial is subject of downtown design contest

PROVIDENCE – A memorial to the U.S. soldiers who died during World War II and the wars in Korea and Vietnam has become the center of a design competition for Providence’s LaSalle Square, the R.I. Convention Center Authority announced last week.

The memorial – the Providence Memorial Honor Roll – had stood in front of the Dunkin’ Donuts Center before renovations there began in 2005. The CCA, in partnership with the city Planning Department, has asked for design ideas for the relocation.

“When the Authority took over the Dunkin’ Donuts Center, we committed to veterans and family members that the relocation of the memorial would be given the highest priority,” David A. Duffy, CCA chairman, said in a statement.

He added, “The plaza in LaSalle Square will provide a more prominent and pedestrian-friendly site downtown.”

The competition, for which a request for proposals (RFP) was announced March 28, will accept design proposals until April 22.

The R.I. Convention Center Authority, established by the General Assembly in 1987, manages and operates the R.I. Convention Center, the Dunkin’ Donuts Center-Providence and related facilities, including the Convention Center parking garage. To learn more, visit www.RIConvention.com.
