The Weekapaug Inn in Westerly, built in 1899 by Frederick Cyrus Buffum, has been added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Jim and DeeDee Buffum, fourth-generation owners and operators of the inn, had applied for the historic status in 2005 and are currently in the planning and permitting stages of renovating the landmark building.

The original Weekapaug Inn had an oceanfront location on the barrier beach between Block Island Sound and the Quonochontaug Pond. Destroyed by the hurricane of 1938, the inn was rebuilt near the original site and has operated as a beach resort ever since.

“The recognition of the inn as a historical landmark is certainly great news for the inn and an accomplishment we want to share with the entire Westerly community,” said Jim Buffum.
