The Welcome House of South County, a homeless shelter, soup kitchen, case management, and housing organization serving the residents of South County since 1987, is pleased to announce the “rebirth” of our community program during our 25th year anniversary through a media event to be held on Saturday, June 22, 2013 between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM. The “rebirth” of Welcome House is especially made possible through the efforts of the very active community leaders at Dennis Moffitt Painting in Peacedale. Mike Moffitt, President of DMP Painting (experienceDMP.com) has graciously offered to help build community interest in Welcome House by offering to donate all the materials and labor to paint the iconic Welcome House shelter located at 8 North Road in Peacedale…..ALL IN ONE DAY! The labor will be provided by the guests, staff, and board members from Welcome House as well as interested residents in South County, all under the professional guidance of staff at DMP Painting.
“DMP Painting has a long history of community support here in Rhode Island, with a keen interest in participating in the resurgence of the village of Peacedale”, stated Mike Moffitt, President of DMP Painting. “We have planned, sponsored, and carried out several makeovers of residential homes in South Kingstown and Narragansett when folks had fallen on hard times, and with the 25th Anniversary of Welcome House, we saw a great opportunity to put our talents to use once again for the benefit of a wonderful community resource. This time our project will benefit the hundreds of guests of Welcome House who are sheltered, fed, and counseled on a daily basis”.
In addition to the “rebirth” of the shelter building through a new and historically inspired coat of paint, Ken Burke (Chair of Welcome House) is very anxious to use this community painting event as the basis of a new program aimed at engaging the Peacedale community to emphasize the importance of Welcome House. They plan on unveiling a “master plan” of Welcome House’s two contiguous properties at 8 and 22 North Road. This new “master plan” will provide a template for the future care and maintenance of the grounds of Welcome House, with an emphasis on living up to its namesake as a true “welcome” house. The master plan was created as a donation by Narragansett resident, landscape architect and engineer, Richard Bourbonnais, and includes community gardens for a sustainable food source for guests, a natural amphitheater to promote artistic activity within the property, enhanced viewsheds showcasing the community gardens, a water feature that provides guests a place to relax and reflect, and a focal point for a future piece of artwork to inspire the “rebirth” of the human spirit.
“One of the goals of the board of directors at Welcome House is to look for creative ways to assist our staff and guests and to help facilitate healthy lifestyles, all while watching the bottom line on expenses during declining philanthropic times”, said Ken Burke. “The development of this master plan helps Welcome House articulate the mission of our agency while making good use of underutilized space”.
The master plan will be on display during the community painting event on June 22nd. Comments or questions on the master plan are welcome.
