Westerly Community Credit Union awards $9K in grants to local teachers

WESTERLY – Westerly Community Credit Union recently awarded 21 WCCU Teacher Grants totaling more than $9,000 for the 2023-2024 school year, the credit union announced.

As of Jan. 3, WCCU has awarded more than $63,300 in teacher grants, according to a news release. Grants in the latest funding round were awarded to teachers from the Coventry, Exeter-West Greenwich, Narragansett, South Kingstown, Westerly and Stonington, Conn., school districts.

Teacher grant recipients included:

  • Pamela Betres, Maria Boulmetis, Andrew Gervasini, Cynthia Ballard, Kristin Abood and Alexandria McKay of the Coventry School District.
  • Robin Borges and Matthew Savoie of the Exeter-West Greenwich School District.
  • Zachary Sirowich, Kristen Bryce, Linda McQuaide, Kayla Tobin and Kimberly O’Donnell of the Narragansett School District.
  • Amber Horton Lambert and Tiffany Court of the South Kingstown School District.
  • Elizabeth Scheibl, Bea Lukens and Susan Russell of the Westerly School District.
  • Laura Dow, Elaine Temel and Diane Gallo of the Stonington School District.

“We are always incredibly amazed with the dedication and passion of our local educators,” Steve White, Westerly Community Credit Union CEO and president, said in a statement. “Each year we award funding for innovative projects to teachers who go above and beyond. We look forward to supporting educators and their creative projects for many more years through our Teacher Grant program.”

The program awards grants in values up to $500 annually to support “creative and experiential educational projects or programs in the area’s school districts,” according to the release.

Special consideration is given to innovative projects that strengthen the relationship between schools and the community at large, the credit union said, as well as to projects that support student excellence.

All applications are judged on educational focus; promotion of skills/excellence; creativity/innovation; community connection; and goal clarity/attainability.
