W&I has new director of maternal-fetal medicine

Women & Infants Hospital has tapped Dr. Katharine D. Wenstrom, a geneticist and nationally recognized leader in her field, to lead the hospital’s Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, which cares for high-risk pregnant women. Wenstrom will also lead the corresponding division at Brown University’s Warren Alpert Medical School.
Wenstrom was most recently a professor and director of prenatal diagnosis and reproductive genetics and the co-director of the Center for Advanced Maternal-Fetal Care at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. She joins Women & Infants in July.
“We are thrilled to have someone of Dr. Wenstrom’s caliber join the faculty staff at Women & Infants and Brown,” said Dr. Joanna Cain, chief of obstetrics and gynecology at Women & Infants and chair of obstetrics and gynecology at the medical school.
Wenstrom “is known for her ability to collaborate with multiple disciplines and practices and mentor residents and junior faculty,” Cain added. “Her leadership abilities will help guide the group of exceptional physicians already here to forge collaborative partnerships throughout the department and the School of Medicine.”
A graduate of Case Western Reserve University, Wenstrom has a master’s degree in pathology from Columbia University and an M.D. from Case Western’s School of Medicine. She completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology and a fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at the University of Illinois, then a fellowship in medical genetics at the University of Iowa. She is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology, maternal-fetal medicine and medical genetics.
Wenstrom has served as president of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, as an executive board member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and as head of the National Institutes of Health Obstetrics and Maternal-Fetal Biology Subcommittee.
Since 2005, she has been editor-in-chief for obstetrics of the Obstetrical and Gynecological Survey; she is also on the editorial board for the American Journal of Perinatology and on the advisory board for the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She was co-author of the last two editions of the textbook “Williams Obstetrics” and has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and chapters.
In addition, Dr. Wenstrom has won multiple awards in her field, including the Society for Gynecologic Investigation President’s Achievement Award . She has been listed among the Best Doctors in America and The Best Doctors for Women annually since 2001.
