More than a decade after it was first discussed, ground was broken for a commuter train and bus station in Pawtucket earlier this month, and simply put, it is good news.
With service for buses by the R.I. Public Transit Authority at the Pawtucket-Central Falls Commuter Rail Station and Bus Hub expected to begin in 2020 and Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority train service expected to follow by the summer of 2022, the new transportation center has the potential to help transform the core of Pawtucket and neighboring Central Falls.
Of course, having the Pawtucket Red Sox set down roots less than a mile from the new transit hub would have been nice, but the redevelopment plans of the two cities do not require the team to make it all work.
For one thing, the R.I. Department of Transportation estimates that the train station will have at least 500 daily boardings, and the relocation of the Pawtucket bus hub from Roosevelt Avenue to the new spot near the intersection of Pine Street and Goff Avenue will bring even more people to this central location every day.
In addition, the two cities have formed a joint commission to create redevelopment goals (and incentives) for the area, which has been branded the Conant Thread District, after a sprawling complex of eight buildings, six of which are reported to be vacant.
While the loss of the PawSox is rightly pinned on the failure of state leaders to step up to the plate, the new transit hub sets the table for Pawtucket and Central Falls to make something happen. Let us hope they recognize and seize the opportunity.
