Women & Infants, others recognized in Best Hospital rankings

PROVIDENCE – Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island earned three designations in the U.S. News & World Report’s 2011-12 Best Hospitals ranking.

Women & Infants ranked 19th in gynecology, is a top-performing hospital in cancer, and the No. 1 hospital in the Providence metropolitan area.

The publication ranked the Top Five of the 24 hospitals in the Providence metropolitan area, which includes New Bedford and Fall River.

Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island and Lifespan’s Rhode Island Hospital tied for second place. The Miriam Hospital was ranked fourth and Morton Hospital and Medical Center in Taunton, Mass., ranked fifth.

The rankings cover 94 metropolitan areas and took into account death rates, patient safety measures, volume of care, and other data, as well as a national survey in which physicians were asked to name the best hospitals in their specialties.

The latest Best Hospitals rankings included 720 hospitals of the approximately 5,000 hospitals nationwide. Each is ranked among the country’s top hospitals in at least one medical specialty and/or ranked among the best hospitals in its metro area.

In May, Women & Infants was named a U.S. News Best Children’s Hospital in Neonatology.

“Being named one of [the nation]’s best hospitals in gynecology, a top performer in cancer, and the No. 1 hospital in the Providence metro area is a recognition of Women & Infants’ preeminence in areas such as obstetrics, reproductive endocrinology, urogynecology and gynecologic oncology,” said Constance A. Howes, president and CEO of Women & Infants. “This continued recognition truly is a testament to the skills and dedication of our entire staff.”

Two Boston hospitals were ranked in the national Top 10 list of the 2011-12 Best Hospitals in the country: Massachusetts General Hospital at No. 2, and Brigham and Women’s Hospital at No. 8. Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital was ranked as a Best Hospital in eight different specialties.
