PROVIDENCE – Donors raised more than $514,000 for renovations to Women & Infants Hospital’s birth center during a fundraiser last month.

“Bright Night for Little Stars,” held at the Rhode Island Convention Center, drew more than 300 attendees.

“I am truly humbled by the generosity and support shown by so many for Women & Infants Hospital and our new birth center. I am also grateful to the many volunteers and committee members who worked so hard to make this year’s event a great success,” said Matt Quin, the hospital’s interim chief operating officer.

The labor and delivery unit at Women & Infants is about 38 years old and needs a number of updates, Care New England Health System’s president and CEO Dr. James E. Fanale told PBN in July.

Care New England did not provide an overall cost for the project or a timetable on when construction is expected to begin.

Renovations will modernize the center, allowing for new technology, personalized delivery options and better care of patients with chronic illnesses, the health network says.

At the fundraiser, Cynthia B. Patterson received the first inaugural Cynthia B. Patterson Lifetime Service Award for 50 years of service at Women & Infants.

Care New England owns Women & Infants along with Butler Hospital, Kent County Hospital, The Providence Center, VNA of Care New England, Integra Community Care Network and Southeastern Healthcare System.

Update: In a July interview, Fanale told PBN that the project’s expected start date was 2021, but on Monday, a CNE spokeswoman said the system is “in the planning phase” of the renovations.
