PROVIDENCE – A new 28-acre park that includes multipurpose trails and active recreational space opened on Tuesday with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting.

The Woonasquatucket Adventure Park includes picnic areas, a parkour course, a bicycle pump track and multiuse trails that connect to the established Merino Park. A pump track is a continuous loop of berms and “rollers,” or smooth dirt mounds, that are ridden without pedaling.

The project was completed with $1 million in city improvements to the two adjoining parks, as well as state and private funds, according to a statement from City Councilman John J. Igliozzi, who represents the area.

The park is at 117 Glenbridge Ave., occupying what was once a vacant parcel of land along the Woonasquatucket River.

In addition to the city funds, financing for the improvements came from the R.I. Department of Environmental Management, the R.I. Department of Transportation, Pisces Foundation, Hydro Flask, McKee Foods and The Nature Conservancy.
