WOONSOCKET – Woonsocket Education Center has unveiled a new 840-square-foot nursing education lab to expand its training capacity and prepare more healthcare professionals.
The lab features hospital equipment, including beds, commodes, wheelchairs and sinks, in addition to patient manikins and instruments such as stethoscopes, blood pressure cuffs and sharps containers, according to the education center’s Aug. 21 announcement.

“Three in 10 Rhode Islanders hold a postsecondary degree, certification or credential, and more need postsecondary to acquire the credentials essential for success in high-demand, high-wage jobs that will make the state an economic powerhouse,” Jill Olson-Crowley, Woonsocket Education Center director, said in the release.
The lab was funded by $200,377 in capital funding grants and programmatic financing from The Champlin Foundation, headquartered in Cranston, and the R.I. Department of Labor and Training.
Established in 2022, Woonsocket Education Center serves as the teaching site for the certified nursing assistant program provided by the Community College of Rhode Island’s Division of Workforce Partnerships. Approved by the R.I. Department of Health, the 13- week program offers classroom instruction and hands-on lab experience.
“This expansion represents a significant step forward in Woonsocket Education Center’s healthcare training portfolio, directly aligning with regional workforce shortages and employer demand in the healthcare sector,” Olson-Crowley said.
