PROVIDENCE – The R.I. Department of Environmental Management announced yesterday that Wright’s Dairy Farm of North Smithfield has been named the 2007 Outstanding Dairy Farm of the Year by the Rhode Island Green Pastures Committee.

The farm has been family owned and managed for more than a century, with a third generation of Wrights now managing the 130-head herd of cows.

Over the years, the family has recognized that it needed to diversify its offerings in order to thrive, resulting in the addition of a 2,400-square-foot retail shop that includes bakery items made on site. The farm houses its cows in a free-stall barn with sand bedding, and works with the Natural Resources Conservation Service on a nutrient-management plan for them.

The Outstanding Dairy Farm of the Year award is sponsored by the New England Green Pastures Committee.
