PROVIDENCE – The annual AIDS Project Rhode Island Run/Walk for Life, which was expanded to include a 5K road race, will be held on April 21 at Roger Williams Park in Providence.
The theme for this year’s event is “It takes a team of heroes to get to zero” and the organizers are encouraging participants to dress in costume as their favorite superhero.
In prepared remarks, APRI Executive Director Stephen Hourahan said: “Public support for the event goes so far in helping us expand our HIV testing efforts, provide comprehensive support services to those living with HIV, and fighting the stigma and discrimination these people still face every day.”
APRI will be offering free AIDS screening tests the day of the event as it works to eliminate the disease in the Ocean State. By its count, upward of 2,700 individuals are living with AIDS in Rhode Island today.
Registration will begin at 8 a.m. at the Roger Williams Park carousel followed by a speaking program at 9. At the close of the speaking program, the 5K will commence with the run/walk to follow.
Awards will be presented to top runners, fundraisers and those with the best superhero costumes. To register for the run/walk or 5K, visit the organization’s website.
