BJ’s Wholesale Club, Inc., based in Natick, Mass., has reported that sales for February 2002 increased by 9.6 percent to $373 million from $340 million in February 2001. Comparable club sales increased by 2.9 percent for the month of February.
“BJ’s sales for the month of February reflect continued strong sales of health and beauty aids, many categories of food, and spring seasonal merchandise, which was set one week earlier this year,” said Jack
Nugent, BJ’s president and chief executive officer.
The February, 2002 year-on-year comparable club sales comparison was negatively affected by approximately 1 percent due to a surge in sales at the end of February 2001 triggered by stock-up for a major snowstorm in early March.
By major market, comparable club sales increases were highest in New England and Upstate New York; and lowest in the Mid-Atlantic region. Comparable club sales increases were strongest during week one and softest in week four. Gasoline sales had a negative impact on comparable club sales, primarily due to significant gasoline price deflation.
