BANKING

Cheryl J. Speno
Cheryl J. Speno has joined First Federal Savings Bank as a wholesale sales manager in the mortgage banking group. In this capacity, she will be assisting customers and prospects for the Fall River-based Bank, in the Connecticut and Western Massachusetts regions. Formerly manager for Norwest Mortgage, she received her associates degree from Central City Business Management.

 

 

 

James M. Hagerty has joined Mellon New England as a relationship manager in the middle market banking department. He is responsible for business development for companies with annual revenues from $20 million to $500 million. A graduate of Providence College, Hagerty joins the Providence-based company as vice president. He is a Certified Public Accountant, formerly with BankBoston’s cultural, education and healthcare division.

EDUCATION
Rhode Island General Treasurer Paul J. Tavares honored recipients of the 2000 General Treasurer’s Award for Outstanding Performance in Business Studies at a State House ceremony in the House Chamber (May 15). High school principals and guidance counselors selected the annual award recipients based on two criteria. The student must have attained a B+ average or equivalent through grades 9, 10, 11 and the first semester of grade 12, and demonstrated leadership potential for future success in the business world.

HEALTH CARE

Gregory J. Austin, MD
Gregory J. Austin, MD has been appointed chief of the division of orthopedics at St. Joseph Health Services of Rhode Island. He will be responsible for orthopedic surgery at Our Lady of Fatima Hospital and its dedicated inpatient orthopedic nursing unit. A member of the medical staff since 1987, Dr. Austin is board certified and specializes in both orthopedic surgery and hand surgery. He received his undergraduate degree from Princeton University and his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He completed his residency in general surgery at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Boston and a residency in orthopedic surgery as well as a fellowship in hand surgery at Tufts University. His is also a clinical instructor in orthopedics at the Brown University Program of Medicine.

 

Kevin J. Pelton, JD, DC
Kevin J. Pelton, JD, DC has been granted medical staff privileges by Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island. He will be providing care as part of the Pain and Palliative Care Team at Women & Infants’ Program in Women’s Oncology in Providence. The program assists women coping with pain and other issues related to their conditions. Dr. Pelton is the principal and physician at Pelton Family Chiropractic Center, Inc. with offices in Portsmouth and Wakefield, where he resides. He earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Rhode Island, his doctor of chiropractic degree at the National College of Chiropractic in Lombard, Ill., and a juris doctorate at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va. He also completed post-doctoral training in physical rehabilitation at the New York College of Chiropractic and the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic.

 

INSURANCE

Robert P. Suglia
Robert P. Suglia, assistant general counsel in the corporate executive department of Amica Mutual Insurance Company, will be honored with the Rhode Island Bar Association Award of Merit on June 9. A North Kingstown resident, he has been with Amica since 1994. He earned an insurance industry Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter designation that same year, and a Chartered Life Underwriter designation in 1999. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Rhode Island College and his juris doctorate from Boston University School of Law. Suglia is a member of the Rhode Island Chapter of the Society of CPCU, and the Society of Financial Service Professionals. He also serves as chair of the Property and Casualty Subcommittee, Rhode Island Code Revision Commission and the Rhode Island Bar Association Committee on Insurance Programs. The RIBA merit awards annually recognize outstanding service to the association and the legal profession.

MANUFACTURING
Michael Black of Glen Burnie, Md. has been appointed president of National Marker Company in Pawtucket. He joined the safety identification product manufacturing company in 1998 as national sales manager. He was then promoted to vice president of sales and marketing. Black attended Drexel University in Philadelphia, as well as the University of Baltimore. He began his career in the safety industry in 1989.

MEDIA

John Granatino
John Granatino has been named regional director for Belo Interactive, the Internet subsidiary of A. H. Belo, parent company of The Providence Journal. He will direct the company’s Internet activities at the newspapers and television stations in Providence, St. Louis, New Orleans, Charlotte, Norfolk, Louisville, and Tulsa. With The Providence Journal since 1980, he has been the newspaper’s director of electronic publishing for the last eight years. Prior to that he served in a variety of positions in the company’s news department, including city editor, state editor, Sunday news editor, assistant features editor and copy editor. A graduate of Tufts University, Granatino is an MBA candidate at the University of Rhode Island. He serves on the board of the Newspaper Association of America’s New Media Federation and on the review committee for the University of Rhode Island’s Department of Marketing at the College of Business Administration.

 

NON PROFIT

Nicole C. Reilly
Nicole C. Reilly of Pawtucket has been named TEEN-Supreme Center Director of The Boys & Girls Club of Pawtucket. She will be responsible for the planning, implementation, and evaluation of all teen programs. She will also oversee the housing authority extension site programs as well as hire, train and evaluate teen center and extension site staff. She has been with the club since 1989 and was previously the director of program services. She is a member of the Kiwanis Club of Pawtucket and a certified Crisis Prevention Institute trainer.

 

SALES

Ellen DiMeco
Ellen DiMeco, account manager for Southern Massachusetts and Rhode Island for PHS Restroom Services, has been honored for her sales performance. Ranking #6 in the PHS Group internationally, her achievements were recognized at an awards ceremony held recently in Bath, England, and again at a President’s Award dinner at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Boston, Mass.

 

TOURISM

Kevin Cameron
Kevin Cameron, general manager of the Radisson Airport Hotel in Warwick, a Johnson & Wales educational facility, has been elected chairman of the board of directors for the Providence Warwick Convention & Visitors Bureau. A resident of Hanson, Mass., he has served on the board since 1998. He will oversee all aspects of the CVB’s operations and management. The Convention & Visitors Bureau is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to create growth for the local hospitality economy by promoting, developing and expanding a united visitor industry.
