IRVINE, Calif. – Freedom Communications Inc. has agreed to sell WLNE-TV ABC6, the ABC affiliate serving Providence and New Bedford as Channel 6 and digital channel 49.
Financial details were not disclosed. The sale is subject approval by the Federal Communications Commission.
What the transaction might mean for WLNE-TV is not yet clear. “Everything’s so brand new,” Ronald Adeszko, the station’s vice president and general manager, told Providence Business News. “I’d imagine this would take probably a couple of months to clear the FCC, and that’s a long time. Anything could happen.”
The agreement was announced by Freedom Broadcasting Inc., a division of Freedom Communications, in a joint statement with purchaser Global Broadcasting LLC, a Delaware corporation owned and operated by local media veterans Kevin O’Brien and Robinson Ewert.
Freedom Communications had said in August that it planned to sell the station, which it has owned since 1983.
